The swampy bog land between the polders de Wormer, de Purmer en de Beemster en the IJ is called Waterland.
Hollandís best known features for tourists are found on the edge of Waterland where the IJsselmeer is called Gouwzee. Like pearls on a necklace from north to south there is Edam, Volendam and Monnickendam and finally on the other side of the Gouwzee, Marken, the former island.
Edam and Volendam formed one borough some time ago but are quite definitely separate. Edam is a proud old Dutch town. With Purmerend and Monnickendam it was one of the three towns from the North to join Alkmaar, Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik to form the seven towns of West Friesland and the North.
